FAQ

What does a solar power system do for me?

By installing a solar power system on your roof, you are able to offset part or all of your energy costs by using net-metering.

What is net-metering?

Net-metering is used by the electric company to provide a credit to their customers for the amount of energy produced by their photovoltaic system. Normally, when buying electricity from the electric company, a meter keeps track of how much electricity is consumed. With net-metering, the meter runs backwards for the amount of electricity produced by the system. At the end of the month, the electric company computes the net amount of energy by subtracting the amount used by the system from the amount provided by the electric provider. If at the end of the year more energy is produced than used, some electric companies will reimburse the customer for that excess energy at the going rate of wholesale electricity.

How do I run my electricity at night?

With net-metering your house remains connected to the electric grid. This means that while your solar power system is not able to produce any electricity, you are still able to use power from the grid.

Is my house eligible to use solar power?

If you have some southern-facing roof space that is not covered with too much shade, solar power is perfect for you!

How does a solar panel create electricity?

The main component of a solar panel is a thin silicon wafer embedded between a layer of clear glass on the front, and often a protective plastic coating on the back. The silicon wafer has two layers sandwiched together; one layer is electron rich, while the other is electron deficient. When the sunlight hits the silicon wafer, photons in the light make electrons move from one layer of silicon to the other. This flow of electrons is captured by electrodes and sent to the home. The power created by the panel is a direct current power, or DC. The power used by common electronics in the home run on alternating current power, or AC, which is what the electric company provides. By sending the DC power from the panels through an inverter, it turns the DC power into AC power. From there, the electricity is run through the electric company’s meter, and into the customers home.
